News Alert – A Wicked Temptation

This is the kind of news I never wanted to have to share.

But it’s with a heavy heart that I’m telling my historical fans that I’m postponing the release of A Wicked Temptation and The Road to Temptation (prequel) indefinitely.

My aim is to always put out quality work not only for myself but because it’s what you (readers) deserve. I’m not going to put out anything less than that. I’ve tried hard to figure out what the problem is and I’ve concluded I’m not in the right head space to write a historical right now. I’ve been spinning my wheels on this for a long time now and getting nowhere. So I’m going to put it aside and work on something else.

I know many of you will be very disappointed, and I sincerely apologize for that. I wish I could deliver the book you deserve right now but I’ve been fooling myself for months that I’ll be able to do that any time soon.

I can’t say when I’ll get the book released, but when it happens, I’ll just send a note to let you know it’s out. No forewarning. At least that way you know you can read right then.

I hope you understand.

Excerpt ★ The Road to Temptation

“He’s a charmer, that one.” Mrs. Griffin smiled broadly, her eyes following his retreat. “It’ll be a lucky woman who gets him to the altar.” A speculative gleam entered her blue eyes when she turned her regard to Meghan.

Given the vein of her recent thoughts, her chaperone’s remark struck Meghan as uproariously amusing and wholly ironic. She managed to swallow down a burst of laughter that came a hairsbreadth from escaping and fought to maintain a straight face. “Mrs. Griffin, if there’s one thing I can assure you, that lucky woman will never be me.”

TheRoadToTemptation300x450Her chaperone patted her hand as if placating a fretful child. “Don’t despair, my dear. Anything could happen. You’re a beautiful girl. Any man would be happy to have you.”

Don’t despair? Don’t Despair!?

A cut from Lady Cranford—a notorious gossip and all-around busybody—would have offended her less. Had she not intoned lucky with the proper amount of derision? Clearly there was no virtue in subtlety.

“No, I don’t think you quite understand. I—” me, Meghan Anne Townsend “—have no desire to marry him—Lord Granville. None at all.” She tacked on the latter should her tone be misconstrued for expressing anything other than her unequivocal rejection of the notion. The mere idea.

Now caught in the grip of a heightened sense of alertness, Mrs. Griffin stilled and stared deeply into her eyes. Her fingertips rested ever so lightly on the white silk of Meghan’s gloved hand, the patting halting completely. After a lengthy pause and much intense scrutiny, an indulgent smile stretched across her face.  When she spoke it was with enough gentle patronization to grate several nerves. “Of course you don’t, my dear. Of course you don’t.”

A Wicked Temptation Excerpt

This is an unedited Excerpt.

“No, my lord, I most heartily dislike you.” Meghan tried her best to carry her grievance with him above the fractiousness of their discussion. But it wasn’t easy. The man had an ego the size of England itself.

Rhys’s eyebrow—the right one—rose slowly. It was an amazing thing to see. She wondered if that was something one had to practice to perfect to the degree he obviously had? His accompanying smile was dangerous in its lethality.

“Heartily you say?” His tone openly mocked her. She hated that. “Should I take that to mean you don’t like me at all, or simply more than usual on this fine evening?”

Meghan gritted her teeth. But not by choice. He was and would always be the most infuriating of men. “At. All.”

His smile remained intact while his eyebrow returned to its original resting place. “I most heartily doubt that.”

He sounded entirely too self-satisfied in all his gloating smugness, which had Meghan seething.

Beyond the pale infuriating.

Doubt it all you want. It is the truth.” It was amazing she could speak, she was so incredibly vexed.

His gaze narrowed ever so slightly and his voice dropped to just above a whisper. “Truth? I’d give you a dash of the truth if I thought you could handle it.”

He was goading her; fishing for things and hoping she would bite.  She was clever, but she needn’t have been to be to clearly see that. But she also rarely turned down a challenge. Especially one filled with such masculine, meant-to-provoke bravado. More likely than not he hoped she’d respond but assumed she would not.

“Your truth or mine?” she asked with a defiant lift of her own eyebrow.

“There is no mine and yours when it comes to the truth. And the truth between us is very simple. You do not heartily dislike me. You don’t even dislike me. In fact, your problem has always been that you like me very much. And undoutedly far too much for you heart to take.”

Trapped at Christmas – Bonus Scenes is now available.

It’s late. I know. And what I thought would a couple scenes that would total no more than 10 to 15 pages ended up being twice as long. But here it is, Paige, Mitch and Bree’s second Christmas as a family. I’ll be sending out a newsletter when everything is finished and up. Hope you enjoy!

TRAPPED now includes this Christmas Bonus short and the prequel, The Trap.

Trapped Bonus Christmas Scene Excerpt

Trapped-Bonus-christmas-800I swear to God, if Paige and I don’t have sex soon, I’m gonna go nuts.

Or my nuts will fall off, whichever comes first.

Thank God, the end to our nine-day sexual drought (due to a sick child) is in sight. I figure if we put Bree down around eight, we can do the polite thing and hang out with the “adults” until nine. Then we can hit the sheets and get naked without looking like a bunch of anti-social house guests.

This year we’re spending Christmas at the Tolston’s. It’s been over a year and I’m still getting used to thinking of Dan as my father and his parents as my actual grandparents. With Diane the mental transition has been easier since she’s always been like a mother to me.

Hoisting my still-dozing daughter higher up in my arms, I follow my grandmother and Paige up the stairs to the guest rooms we’ll be using during our week-long stay. Bree konked out on the drive over the minute we hit the highway.

I brush a kiss over the silky brown hair fringing her forehead. “Come on honey, it’s time to wake up.” It’s three o’clock, which means nap time’s over.

In response, she tightens her little arms around my neck, burrowing deeper into me.

My heart does its familiar squeeze. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this—how much I love her. Diane says having a child is like having your heart on the outside of your body. She’s right. Bree has mine wrapped around her little finger.

But as much as I love her, if she sleeps any longer, it’s going to be a bitch getting her to bed before ten tonight. And I have plans with her mother that doesn’t include a wide-awake, too-inquisitive two-year-old.

My grandmother stops and gestures through the open door of the first bedroom. “And this is where Paige and Briana will be sleeping.”

Wait! What? Bree is supposed to have her own room. As a matter-of-fact Bree does have her own room whenever she spends the night.

Bewildered, my gaze shoots from my grandmother, to a wide-eyed Paige, and then inside the guest room that’s decorated as if one of those house magazines are due here any minute for a shoot. The first thing I notice is that the pink and green toddler bed from across the hall now sits beside the queen-sized one. Heart now thumping erratically, my attention swings back to my grandmother.

She returns my panicked stare with an arched look. “Call me old-fashioned, but in my house unmarried young people do not share a room nor do they share a bed.”

What. The. Everloving. Fuck?

The Road To Temptation – (Unedited Excerpt)

TheRoadToTemptationOlivia eagerly trailed her brother into the drawing room. Meghan had no desire to hear Rhys announce his engagement to Millicent Cartwright. But what was she to do? She had little choice at this point, as she was presently a guest in their home. So she straggled a fair distance behind the siblings, cursing the care she’d taken with her appearance.

“Rhys, you mustn’t be coy. What did she say? Not that I doubt her answer.”

To witness her friend’s reaction, one would swear it was Olivia who was to be married.

A faint smile teased the corners of his mouth as he poured a drink from the decanter. Turning toward them, he lifted his glass in a toast. “She refused me.”

Meghan’s heart, which had only recently lain shattered on the floor, began the delicate task of fitting itself together. It then gave a healthy beat, so much improved from the anemic ones of five minutes ago.

Rhys would not be marrying Lady Millicent.

Relief would be a mild word to adequately describe the emotion that swept through and over her. Swarmed every cell in her body.

Olivia’s lips parted on a startled gasp. “What do you mean she refused you?” Her question began in shock and ended in indignation.

Lord Granville downed a healthy swallow of whatever spirit was in his glass before he answered. “I mean she does not want to marry me.” He shrugged. “She doesn’t love me.”

“You don’t appear the least put out by it.”

“Do you love her?”

Olivia’s question came out a hairbreadth before hers but it was to Meghan his attention turned and to whom he answered. “No, I do not love her.”

“Then why would you want to marry her?” Meghan asked.

She may only be sixteen but she wasn’t so naïve as to believe that all marriages were love matches. But he was heir to a dukedom. His family had wealth beyond one’s wildest dreams. He, of all handsome young lords and heirs, had a luxury not always afforded others. He could marry for love.

Rhys barked out a laugh and then immediately muffled the sound with the back of his hand. His expression sobered when greeted with the seriousness of hers.

Meghan didn’t think what she’d said had been amusing at all.

He let out a small sigh. “You are young. You both are.” He said it as if it were a sickness of which they’d be cured of in the future. “But one day you will learn that there are more practical reasons to marry than love. Indeed, more often than not, an enduring marriage is the result of shared values, mutual respect, and common backgrounds and goals.”

To Meghan’s ears, such a union sounded…empty and cold. Lacking in warmth and passion. Mostly passion.

“But why can’t you have all of that and love?” Olivia asked.

Again he shrugged, this time the gesture appeared to embrace more the skeptic in him than the optimist. “I suppose one can. But that isn’t my goal.”

His sister shook her head in confusion. “But why?”

“I will simply say that love blinds one to important things and leave it at that.”

Meghan’s young heart didn’t shatter at his words. The light in it simply dimmed. And she could now see some truth in his claims. Certainly, her infatuation with him had left her blind to the man he truly was.

Rhys Wakefield would not marry for love.

And therefore, he would never be the man for her.

It’s out!

The best way to ruin a perfectly wonderful friendship?

Have sex with your BFF.

A mistake.

That’s what Troy calls what was easily the single best sexual experience of my life. He claims our “slip” was due to too much alcohol. I respond the only way I know how, which is by burying the entire experience under a six-foot mound of denial and regret. Lesson learned.

When I’m finally in a place emotionally where I can move on with someone else, Troy does a complete about face. Now he wants me. And he wants more.

That should have been the end, right? I’m getting what I’ve wanted since I was sixteen. But devastating news turns Troy’s life upside down and soon becomes my cross to bear. And the only way I can get back everything I lost is to bare it all. Literally.

Now my boyfriend may be a progressive, twenty-first century kind of guy, but when it comes to his girlfriend posing nude for Playboy?

He’s 100% Neanderthal.
